A Quick Word on Website Optimization

Website optimization, or the tweaking of websites to improve your customers’ online experiences with your company, is becoming an extremely important topic in the area of eMarketing. After conducting several website evaluations for clients, I am becoming increasingly frustrated with the design, functionality, and usability of many websites I come across in my personal web surfing.

You Don’t Have a Website?

It goes without saying that no matter how large or small your company is, you should have a website. I don’t care if you have zero budget and extremely little time. You should take 20 minutes out of your day and set up a free website with Google Pages, at the very least. At least then, customers who search for you on the web will be able to find an address, contact number, or basic description of what services you provide.

In this day and age, an individual goes straight to the internet when looking for a product or service. More specifically, they go straight to a search engine. You’re not in the search engines, much less the first few pages of results, if you don’t even have a website.

Long story short: Build a website. If you don’t have one, I guarantee you that you’re losing business. Do you want a simple website but don’t want to take the time to build it? Contact me and we can create a Google Pages site together, with little to no work from you.

Make Your Site Usable, Already!

So, you have a website, and your satisfied with its navigation and layout. I’m glad that you’re happy with your site. I’m glad that you can navigate it without a problem, and all the information that you need is available where you can find it.

Unfortunately, your customers are not as close with the site as you are, and they can’t find the information they’re looking for. So, they press the back button and click on the site that appears below you in the search engine…your competitor.

Remember that your customers are the people that will be visiting and using your site. Think of every possible type of information that your customers or potential customers may be looking for and make sure it’s somewhere on the site. Then, make sure it’s three clicks away from any other page on the site. Otherwise, that little green “back” arrow will be used to exit your site.

Determining Your Website Score

Does your website need optimized or are customers satisfied? You could do a survey of your customers and find out their level of satisfaction of the site. However, in this case you’re only capturing your current customers. You may be losing a whole group of customers because of the lack of usability of your website- you’re not getting these people’s opinions.

So how can you determine what tweaks should be made to increase your customer’s overall experience with your online brand?
